Living in Alabaster
Alabaster for buyers, sellers, renters and rental owners
Alabaster grew up around a cotton mill. The Siluria Cotton Mill opened on Buck Creek in 1896, and that mill site is now the city's Municipal Complex. Today Alabaster is a Shelby County city of 33,284 people (2020 Census) on I-65 and US-31, with its own school district and Baptist Health Shelby Hospital.
Two towns made the modern city. Alabaster incorporated in 1953 and merged with neighboring Siluria in 1971, according to the City of Alabaster. The name comes from the high-calcium limestone quarried and burned for lime here. The old water tower, listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, and a small 19th-century jail still stand at the mill site, now called the Siluria Mill District.
The city covers about 25 square miles in the Cahaba and Opossum valleys, divided by Pine Ridge, with Buck Creek and Beaverdam Creek running toward the Cahaba River. In a sale, the details we check first are which side of I-65 a home is on, whether it is inside Alabaster or Pelham limits (Weatherly crosses the line), and how far it is to exit 238.

Schools
Which schools serve Alabaster homes?
Homes inside Alabaster city limits are served by Alabaster City Schools, which separated from Shelby County Schools on July 1, 2013. It has five schools: Creek View and Meadow View elementary schools (pre-K to 3), Thompson Intermediate (4–5), Thompson Middle (6–8) and Thompson High (9–12).
Because the district has one intermediate, one middle and one high school, the elementary school is the main zone question for most Alabaster addresses. The district office is at 2013 Warrior Parkway. Addresses on the Pelham side of Weatherly, and homes with an Alabaster mailing address outside city limits, may be in a different district, so confirm the zone with Alabaster City Schools before you buy, list or lease.
School zones can change. Always confirm the zone for a specific address with the school district.

Buy & sell
Buying and selling a home in Alabaster
Alabaster has a broad mix of housing: single-family homes in subdivisions built over several decades, lake and wooded lots in Weatherly, and townhomes. The Census median owner-occupied home value is $261,700 (2020–2024 ACS).
We price Alabaster homes against sales in the same subdivision and the same school zone, and we flag the things local buyers ask about: the drive to exit 238, whether a lot backs to a creek or floodplain along Buck Creek, and HOA dues and amenities. If a home is in Weatherly, we confirm whether the parcel is in Alabaster or Pelham, because that decides the city services and school district. Sellers get a free valuation from comparable sales; buyers get our read from an office about two miles up US-31.
