Living in Trussville

Trussville for buyers, sellers, renters and rental owners

Trussville began with a grist mill on the Cahaba River in 1821 and is now a city of 26,123 people (2020 Census), up from 19,933 in 2010. It sits on the northeast side of the Birmingham area at the I-59/I-459 interchange, about 16 miles from downtown, and lies in both Jefferson and St. Clair Counties.

Two things set Trussville apart. The first is the Cahaba Project, a planned community the federal Resettlement Administration built in the late 1930s: more than 240 houses and 44 duplexes laid out around a central green called the Mall, many in the American four-square style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006; its entrance gateway stood at Main Street and Parkway Drive. The second is the river. The upper Cahaba, Alabama's longest substantially free-flowing river, starts near here and runs through town, with a paved greenway along its banks.

Trussville incorporated as a town in 1947 and became a city in 1957. Because it crosses a county line, we confirm the county (Jefferson or St. Clair) and city limits for every parcel. It affects where the deed is recorded and who assesses property taxes.

Trussville homes range from 1930s Cahaba Project houses near downtown to subdivisions built from the late 20th century on. The Census median owner-occupied home value is $370,300 (2020–2024 ACS).

Historic Cahaba Project homes and newer subdivision homes appeal for different reasons and don't price off each other, so we compare within the same area and era. For any Trussville home, we confirm the county, city limits and school zone, and check flood zone status near the Cahaba River before you write an offer or set a price.

Property management

Renting out a home in Trussville

Trussville's Census median gross rent is $1,711 (2020–2024), the highest of the ten areas on our site, and rentals are scarce: 91.8% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.

Lease demand comes from the Trussville City Schools zones, interstate access at I-59/I-459, and the downtown Gateway District. Because so few homes are rented, each rental competes on condition and location, and pricing has to come from a small set of comparable leases. If the home is in a subdivision with an HOA, check the covenants and current rules on leasing first; we review them with you.
