Living in Vestavia Hills
Vestavia Hills for buyers, sellers, renters and rental owners
Vestavia Hills is about 7 miles from downtown Birmingham and 6.5 miles from UAB via US-31. It is made up of four distinct areas: original Vestavia on Shades Mountain, Rocky Ridge and Altadena, Liberty Park, and Cahaba Heights.
The city takes its name from "Vestavia," the temple-style home Birmingham mayor George Ward finished on the crest of Shades Mountain in 1925. His garden gazebo, now Sibyl Temple, still marks the northern entrance at US-31 and Shades Crest Road. Developer Charles Byrd began the first subdivision in 1946, the city incorporated in 1950, and it later annexed Rocky Ridge and Altadena (1980s), Liberty Park (1992) and Cahaba Heights (2002).
Because those areas were built in different eras, two Vestavia Hills homes at the same price can differ a lot in age, lot and layout. That shapes pricing for sellers, inspections for buyers and maintenance planning for rental owners.
